YOP9 – Week 9/52

A differently weighted update this week, as almost no crafting done!

Felting

I worked on a needle felting project at the felting group.  It is a 3D version of my dog Ylva, but it’s a long way off being finished so no photo yet.

Knitting

On Friday I took great care when knitting the next lace section of Nurmilintu shawl, and therefore got on much better with the instructions for the first 10 rows.  I’m still suspicious about the chart from row 11 of the lace sections, but less tweaking was required on the latter rows although I’ve ended up 1 stitch different to pattern.  I don’t think lace is going to be my thing.

I’ve been thinking of frogging Void!  It has been hibernating for some months and I’m wondering whether a capelet type top may be better for the yarn…I’m concerned that Void is very long horizontally but not very wide and so may not be the warm cosy item I want to have on for TV watching.  I found one I like for the yarn I’m using but there’s no pattern!  Unless I’m missing how to access it??

Other News

Well what a full on and fun packed few days with my friend Susan and her 2 sons.
  • Sunday we went for a walk around Loch Kinellan and the boys spotted an Adder (UK’s only poisonous snake)!  It was an unusually hot day so he was maybe sunbathing!
  • Monday we headed an hour south west and played Disc Golf (golf with a frisbee and baskets), then had a picnic on Findhorn beach and did a tour of the Findhorn Foundation (an eco and spiritually minded community).
  • Tuesday we headed an hour south and did a walk around the Frank Bruce sculpture trail before going Stand Up Paddle-boarding on Loch Insh.  We then came home and had a fish & chips takeaway before heading to Strathpeffer for Susan to see where my scarves are sold (she bought one too which was kind) we then watched the Pipe Band and Scottish dancers.
  • Wednesday we headed an hour north to Dunrobin Castle and watched the falconry display, had a look in the hideous museum full of trophy hunts from the Sutherland family’s hunting holidays…it is pretty gruesome.  We then went to Dornoch for hot chocolate and a walk on the beach there.
  • Thursday we went to Cromarty for a boat trip in search of the resident bottlenose dolphin population, but they were hiding.  We saw some seals and birds but were disappointed to not have spotted the dolphins or harbour porpoises.  We had lunch in a nearby restaurant and then a quick stop to drop me off and they headed off down to Edinburgh for a night.
On Thursday afternoon and Friday, I mostly snoozed on the sofa and rested my hip which I’d strained falling off the SUP…or maybe when I was climbing back on.  It was a great few days and I loved having them here.  Next summer they will likely go to Ireland to see their Uncle, Aunty and cousins, so it will be 2 years before they are likely to come back up.  I will visit them in Spring next year hopefully.  We crammed a lot in and I enjoyed every minute.  Even getting wet in Loch Insh.

  1. Ooooh… I look forward to seeing Ylva in felt! How creative of you! And what a gloriously fun week you had. I enjoyed reading about your adventures and seeing the pictures. I hope your hip fully heals up soon (or maybe it is already?) 🙂

    • You can join part way through the year, you just need a list of projects you’d like to complete by end of June 2020 and join the Ravelry group, so whenever you are ready is fine to join. I should have put a link. The picture of the round wooden house was made from a recycled mashing tub from a whisky distillery!

  2. I’ve been thinking of needle felting lately like I need a new hobby! NOT! I can’t wait to see Ylva in wool! What a great week you had and what wonderful sights and activities. I hope your hip feels better!
