YOP9 – Week 39/52

YOP_20192020.jpg

Well that’s us now 3/4 of the way through the YOP year.  With my creative mojo on a break this means I’ll have a lot of things carried forward, but I have done a lot.  At the bottom is a snapshot of my list and what I have achieved so far.

Knitting

I finished a dishcloth and started a new one, but that’s it on the knitting front!

Spinning

I plied then soaked and snapped my orange yarns.
I gave my spinning wheel a good rub with teak oil.  Gee whizz 5 days later the house still smells.

Weaving

I cut the Krokbragd sample off the loom, it is an odd shape to know what to do with, maybe just an oblong coaster.  I had thought about trying some other things using up the remaining warp before cutting, but the pull in (how much it has shrunk in on each side) was quite tight, so I want to re-thread the cut warp through a wider reed and then use the rug yarn I’d bought.  (I have given my new reeds a coat of the teak oil as well.)

Here’s what happened when I tried to remove some warp threads!  3 hours it took to untangle!  I ended up having to remove them all.  This was on Friday, when I also made a batch of totally delicious sultana cookies….I ate 9!!!!  9!!!! Needless to say I didn’t need any dinner.  (I have provided the link, but will deny any responsibility for anyone else’s weight gain if you try this recipe. 😋)
Other News
Well I have tried to keep busy doing things around the house.  I washed the windows, polished the door brass!, tidied the greenhouse (being a big brave girl with all the spiders in there), planted some vegetable seeds, weeded my 6 raised borders and fruit bed.  I am a bit short on seed compost, so some seeds I’ll need to just plant outside in about 4-6 weeks when risk of frost has hopefully passed.  I also don’t have any courgette (zucchini) seeds left.  I had said to myself I wasn’t going to order more online things, to help protect our post people, but I have ordered a pack of courgette and tenderstem broccoli seeds, but that’s it now for mail ordering. which is a shame.  Most of my seeds are past their best before date, but we’ll see what grows.  Way back when….this blog was about vegetable gardening!
In the UK the majority of shops have all closed now, so that includes garden centres.  We are allowed one visit to a shop per day for essential items, but as the numbers of infected people in the Highlands is growing and us not knowing exactly where those cases were, we really are just managing on what we have as much as possible.  I went to the pet shop, where you call them from the car, pay over the phone and then they bring the bag of food out and then you can get out of the car to collect it.  I did also go to the chemist to pick up some prescriptions, which was only allowing 2 customers in at a time and had lines on the floor to ensure proper spacing.  Our supermarket has a cleaning station for handles, has markers on the floor and a limited amount allowed in at one time. It really is a different world we are living in at the moment.  The things I’ve taken for granted my whole life, really makes you appreciate the little things!
So long as I am active, doing something, I’m not too worried about my missing crafting mojo.  Gardening is better physically probably and mentally is equally as meditative as crafting.  Spring cleaning is a bit of a chore, but it is nice to have clean windows for a change.
We have been able to move our holiday to the Isle of Lewis to next March, this is a relief as we worried we would lose the money. We have a really cold wind coming from the north the next few days, so I’m grateful for earlier in the week, when it was sunny and mild.
Stay safe and stay home folks xx

  1. I love gardening! Our current house doesn’t really allow for it, so I make do with a bunch of planters and hanging baskets when our weather warms up. Looking forward to seeing how your garden grows! Also, love your orange yarn, and your weaving project turned out great as well!

  2. You have completed quite a few items. You still have 12 weeks left to complete more. Providing your mojo returns. Your dishcloth is one of the two patterns I use. I just might make a few using that pattern as I am getting quite tired of the DW cloths I have made. I learned something new today. Sultana! I had no idea what they were. Now I know. Thanks for that bit of education. We do not have them here in the US. We have golden raisins and black raisins so am wondering if the golden raisins would be a close second to sultanas. Your garden sound lovely (other than the spiders). You will have some great fresh veggies gracing you table in a few months. Your mess of yarn made me cringe. I can see why it took 3 hours to untangle. So proud that you did not give up on it. The oblong coaster is so bright and cheery. Nice work. Stay well Liz.

  4. Thank you for the reminder about gardening. I have a number of plants that need repotting and I do have lots of soil I bought at the end of last year’s gardening season. Your washed and snapped yarn is gorgeous!! Oh, my, that tangle cause my heart to leap – I am glad you got it sorted. Take care. It sounds like your stores are being very sensible.

  5. Your Krokbragd is really pretty. Liz. I love the tiny tassels! And I’m looking at your Sultana’s, but thinking about the chocolate chip cookies I gave into and made this weekend. Being (more or less) housebound makes comfort eating really easy right now. The restrictions where you live sound severe. I wonder how they are enforced. I do wonder as the virus spreads here in the States, how much tighter restrictions may become.

    • The police are stopping people who are out and about and asking them why they are out. Mostly it is working though, although there are some idiots around. The government passed new legislation allowing fines to be issued and people charged. It’s going to be the only way to stop it spreading and suspect the US states will each introduce similar as it takes a grip in each state. X

  6. I really love how the spinning turned out. I was spinning this weekend and husband reminded me that it’s time for my wheel to have another oil.

I absolutly love your list and I am so glad that I am not the only one with loads and loads of projects either on the go or planned.

  7. I have so many things to do around the house but between this distance learning for the boys and having to work, I feel like I have even less time even though we’re all stuck at home, too. ::sigh:: Maybe I just need to schedule better. Who knows.
