Tour de Fleece 2023

I’ve been a little disorganised this year with some projects unfinished on two of my spinning wheels. I’d usually start the tour with clean bobbins, so instead I spent day 1 doing that.

Our Guild team had a zoom call this evening and I plied some Black Cheviot (spun on Ashford Traveller and plied on Ashford Traditional with jumbo bobbin) which is 3 ply, 100g of chunky yarn.

I then spun the 2nd bobbin of a White Welsh Mountain sample fibre and plied it with some I’d spun a couple of weeks ago. It’s pretty hairy and when I was plying it I’d forgotten to put a tea towel on my knee so my lap looked like I’d been wrestling a polar bear.

So now I have clear wheels, ready to start on some new projects.

My plan (at the moment) is to spin some merino (67%)/alpaca (33%) blends on my Ashford Traveller. They are different colours and my plan is to spin the colours separately and then weave a checked scarf with it.

On my Nano e-spinner I’m going to try spinning the Baby camel and silk advent pack from Coastal Colours (Ravelry link). I’ve not tried it on my Nano yet, so will see how it goes.

Finally I’m travelling light, down to visit my sister on Monday to Thursday so I plan to pack my Turkish spindle and a few rolags just to spin a little each day.

  1. Beautiful fibres, I look forward to seeing them after spinning!
I’m also trying to keep my projects manageable for TDF this year (in the past I’ve ended up with lots of unfinished projects by the end!). I’ve got two partially processed fleeces to spin and ply, a spindle project to take with me when I’m out and some small samples of fibre to experiment with if I’m short on time one day. I usually overestimate how much I’ll be able to get done in the time, so I’m hoping that restricting my projects will give me a better chance of completing everything.

  2. LOL like minds think alike! I had to clear my wheels today too :P. The merino/alpaca is really pretty, and then weaving it, very cool! The rolags are really pretty, I bet that will be some beautiful yarn!

  3. The Tour seems to have crept up on me a bit this year for some reason. I love those merino/alpaca colours and I can’t wait to see you weaving with them.

    • I tried the baby camel and silk on my Nano and it’s very enjoyable spinning that on there as well as my big wheels. I may just get that whole advent spun this month if I include the women’s Tour de France after it.
