YOP15 Week 10/52 – starting a new cowl

Acquisitions/Collection Curation

I bought some 3mm and 4mm beads and some hoops and small wooden rings to make more Dorset buttons.  They are so relaxing to make.

Knitting

I started a new cowl this week. The pattern is Little Gemstones Cowl.  A separate pattern to the shawl shawl I made, but same principle.

I think this is my first cowl using 4 ply yarn.  Usually my cowls are way thicker.  This will be more decorative than adding much warmth to my neck.

The yarns are gorgeous.  The background colour is Cookston Crafts merino, alpaca, nylon in the  colour Crathie.  The Gemstones are a bundle of minis from Iolair Yarn, their Luing base, which is 70% alpaca, 20% silk and 10% cashmere.

I have also brought down some chunky yarn to make a new jumper so hopefully will cast that on next week.

Spinning

I finished plying the Charollais yarn.  My hope is to dye it…just not sure where my dyeing mojo is right now.

Other News

This week was much more relaxed.

The downstairs bedroom curtains have driven me crazy for years, the black out lining would detach, the curtains would unhooked from the curtain rings, the draw-in thread had broken, so it had lost its gathering pleats.

So I bought a load of smaller curtain rings, fixed the threads and finally have curtains that block a good amount of the light and hang neatly.  The hem has come undone in places so I still need to fix that.  These were bought by the previous occupants.  We’ve lived here 18 years so its been a while they have needed fixing!

Yesterday we were at the first Northern Star Country Music festival in Inverness.  One of my favourite bands, The Wandering Hearts, played a set.  I am not sure a whole day/evening of country music is necessarily something I would do again.  But happy to have seen their 50 min set.

We have some appointments to view nursing homes for my MIL and have a lot of work ahead of us getting her car and home sold to pay for it.  Many of the local ones we would just be adding her name to their waiting list but fingers crossed it won’t take too long.

This is a Year of Projects post. Officially the Group is in its 15th year, but this is my 8th year participating. If you would like to find more about the Year of Projects Group on Ravelry, as you’d be very welcome to join us.

Year 15 list.

  1. I really like the gemstones patterns. I definitely want to knit the shawl or cowl sometime. Best wishes with moving your MIL and selling her home. We were lucky with my dad as they had one unit available. We had hoped for a one bedroom unit but only a studio was available. It’s turned out to be fine for him. As I’ve posted, my siblings and I are in the process of clearing out my dad’s house so it can be sold. It’s a long process as there is so much stuff!! It’s work just figuring out how to get rid of it all. I’m lucky that my brother and SIL have done much of the work.

    • I shall be doing some clearing out on my own in Thursday whilst he is at work and football. That way I can make sure any tatt he may be inclined to keep isn’t there any more. My plan is to have 1 full suitcase of clothes (in addition to the clothes she already has with her at hospital, some ornaments and personal items and the rest is going. Easy to be unsentimental when you are an in-law. He already has her old photo albums.

  2. Very pretty colors for your new cowl. I would think the alpaca wool would create great warmth. The music festival sounds like fun. Hopefully you find a wonderful place for your MIL. May she be accepted in soon. I do not envy you getting her home and car sold.

  3. Your new cowl is looking gorgeous already! You have been undertaking some serious tasks lately – hopefully it will start to slow down for you soon. Glad you had the experience of seeing one of your favorite bands! I would not want to listen to a day of country music either. 🙂
