YOP12 Week 51/52 – Melting!

Acquisitions/Stash Management

My new yarns have arrived. I wandered around the house trying to get true colours in the photo….then I gave up and took this shot.

  • Drops Bomull-Lin in Dark Blue
  • Malabrigo Rios in Ankara Green.

Knitting

Socks

I finished the Rose City Rollers using the dusky pink and gothic rainbow leftover yarns. I love the stripes on the heel, maybe I will do some more stripy heeled socks!

I’ve wound up some yarn cakes in the sock yarns I dyed at the start of last year. I just seem to want to knit socks at the moment but I haven’t cast them on yet.

Other/household

I’ve added the last few bits of the rainbow yarn to my habitation throw and most of the dusky pink. I also found a few other scrap bits of 4 ply that I’ve started to add.

Other News

I had so many things I planned to do this week, but it’s been so warm and with no air con or fans I’ve basically not had the energy to do very much at all around the house. Certainly not painting walls that I’d planned to do.

I haven’t slept well with the heat and Fitbit says I’ve averaged less than 6 hours per night, I need at least 7. I’ve just been trying to stay in the house with blinds closed and walking the dog at about 9.30pm or later once its cooled down. (Sunset is after 10pm here at the moment.)

Yesterday had a cooler breeze and a few clouds finally. I will never moan again about our usually cool temperature summers here in the Highlands. (I mean I probably will, but I’ll kid myself now. The Brits love nothing more than moaning about the weather. It’s in our DNA.)

I did a check-in post on my word of the year (Less) this week, here’s the link if you missed it.

Fingers crossed it will be cooler this week and I can construct the lampshades. No way I was getting my iron out in the heat.

This is a Year of Projects post.  Officially the Group is in its 12th year, but this is my 5th year participating.  If you would like to find more about the Year of Projects Group on Ravelry.

Year 12 list.

  1. I love the Malabrigo yarn – such a fab colour. And your socks are great. I hear you about the heat although we do own a few fans .

    • I should have just bought one from Amazon at the start and then kept thinking it would cool down…I’ve lived here 18.5 years and don’t remember such prolonged heat. We will buy one in the Black Friday sale when they should be much cheaper by then.

  2. I can not imagine trying to sleep in hot weather. We have ceiling fans in everyroom and even with the A/C I have them going to keep the air circulating. Trying to sleep without air movement would make me crabby. I hope your weather cools off again soon for you. Your socks are so pretty. My hubby was looking over my shoulder when I brought up your blog and he even said “those are some pretty socks”. Yes, he is knit worthy. Love the new yarn you have purchased too. Sock knitting is a must during warm weather.

    • Oh that’s lovely to hear thank you (and him). I guess as temperatures keep creeping up they will start designing houses more like American ones with built in ceiling fans. I’ll just have to move to the Shetland Isles (further north)

  3. Soo good to read about you also stubbling on the path of yarn acquisition. Where did my willpower go??? But I also am happy with my purchases. Sorry it is so hot in Scotland. We are also above normal for temperatures but fortunately the humidity has been low, due to the lack of rain, so we have enjoyed being out on our decks. Love your socks!

  4. I’m curious what your temperature range is too hot for you – for me, at 80F/26C I stop moving; at 90F/32C my brain gets foggy. I also have trouble sleeping when it gets warm, but I designed my house to stay cool, and it generally cools off at night here so I can open everything up and drop the temp, then close things up in the morning. Last summer the house got close to 80F because I’d had some large trees cut down that were shading the solar panels, but also shading the south side of the house; before, the hottest had been about 73F. When it’s that hot I have a damp sheet over me, and a fan blowing, which makes sleep more likely. I’m not a fan of a warming climate!

    • Really if it gets above 19°C I struggle and the prickly heat starts. It has been 24c/75f to 26c/78.8f so my fingers, behind my ears and upper chest are covered in prickly heat blisters. I’m definitely not built for warmth and am very acclimatised to 18°C being warm and often garden in a short sleeved r-shirt at 14°c. The humidity was 95-99% and that just totally zaps me.

  5. Scrumptious yarns! I can’t believe your heat! I have to have AC….I can stand the cold better than the heat although getting older I notice I don’t like extremes of either. Your RCR socks are so cute with those heels. I was wondering about a wool blanket but the washing would be a task wouldn’t it? I hope it cools off for you .

  6. The rose city rollers look good, do you like their fit?

We are a bit hotter than normal for June too, almost 91 F all week this coming week. I think that is almost 32 Celsius. Without humidity you can open the windows and screened doors (I’m not a big fly and bug person and those come in in droves without a screen) and have a fan going, but if it’s humid (something that is normal here) you need refrigerated air as a normal fan won’t do it, tho I use a fan to blow around the refrigerated air because for some reason they put my air conditioner in the kitchen and I spend more time in the living room :P.

  7. Ugh, it’s the humidity that is so draining. I went out yesterday to do twenty minutes of light weeding and to plant up my corn and when I came in I was so sweaty and clammy! Nothing seems to shift it at the moment. I love those socks!
