It has been a mixed week, I managed to get rid of quite a lot of things from the house, but then more of my MIL’s stuff has come here for sorting and donating.
Outgoing (Donated, Recycled or Sold)
- Clothes: Bags of my own clothes, that didn’t fit me were donated or sent to textile recycling depending on their condition.
- Curtains: The curtains were up when we moved in 20+ years ago and the black out curtains lining kept falling off…so now I just have the blackout lining as the curtains and it looks better and hangs better so no more bright mornings.
- DVDs: About 10 DVDs went, even though we have a zillion streaming channels it is hard to cut down on these. We usually select some to take with us to holiday cottages. I have a box set of Laurel and Hardy films and decided to hold off donating that set, until I had watched them. I watched one, it was funny but not enough to have me watch the rest, so next drop off I will take it.
- A huge fleece blanket with arms. I have knitted a couple of blankets and crocheted one, so no need for artificial fibre one.
- PlayStation 2 and 3, games, controllers, cables, mics etc*
- Dinky and Corgi die-cast cars etc.*
- Some old silver coins.*
- A silver plated cake knife (from my 1st wedding! )*
- Pewter bracelet*
- Electricals: I took an old stereo system to the tip but their electrical recycling was full so had to bring it back again.
The only item that went to landfill this week was my old duvet.

Incoming (from MIL’s)
- Ginormous garden umbrella and stand
- Kitchen odds and ends, some we will maybe keep the rest will donate.
- Carpet cleaner: we will swap with ours because it leaks, that was also previously hers too!
- Ironing board: we will swap out my mum’s old one which is incredibly heavy with the lighter one from my MILs. We don’t iron clothes, its only used for ironing woven or sewn items.
- Many more of MIL’s clothes, shoes and bags, goodness she was a serious shopaholic.
- Metal stepladder: that I will use for internal house painting, which I will swap with my grandpa’s old wooden one which is now very wobbly to stand on. (He died in 1980 and it was pretty old and rickety then.)
- Duvet and a set of bedding: which is on our spare bed and one set of towels for that room’s en-suite
- Ginormous TV
- Garden stuff: chairs that match our garden sofa. Some garden ornaments
Luckily the buyer of the property has said we can leave the furniture, spare bedding and “anything else we don’t want”. I didn’t want to abuse that offer by leaving everything. She has 4 kids so I am sure lots will get taken by them.
The neighbours have taken a few things and some was sold to neighbours with the money going to charity last year.
*Some of our own outgoing has gone to Vintage Cash Cow, it is free to post stuff to them and they give you an offer for the contents. If you don’t accept it they send your stuff back. Postage is free both ways, upto 30kg. We sent off 17kg of stuff, will be interesting to see how much they offer.
Next week
Hopefully electrical recycling will be available this week, as we have a lot of stuff to go. My husband can take it to Inverness instead, but that’s not as convenient as our own town’s one.
This coming week I plan to advertise a lot of stuff on Facebook’s local freebies group and hopefully clear a lot of stuff. There’ll also be more charity shop drop offs.
I may order another postage label for Vintage Cash Cow to send them more, or may wait a bit until I have spent more time going through our stuff.
The house and garage are even more cluttered now. I plan to spend a lot of today concentrating on more decluttering and sorting.
No crafting has been done all week.
