YOP13 Week 16/53 – Fisherman’s Rib Cowl FO

Acquisitions/Stash Management

Remember that totally gluttonous post last week with all the yarn I’d bought…well I may have ordered some more!

To quote what I said last week “I managed to pick a Jamieson’s colour that I am going to make a future jumper with, but no rush on buying that yet.” Well then I started to notice how few places had 11 x 25g balls of this colour, and noticed on Jamieson’s of Shetland’s own website how many colours were Sold Out, so I ordered it and oh my goodness I love the deep red. The colour is called Maroon, it’s so rich. It’s going to become Goldenfern by Jennifer Steingass (all links in this post are to Ravelry) one day with some other Jamieson’s of Shetland colours I already have in my stash.

Knitting

Accessories

I finished my Fisherman’s Rib cowl earlier in the week. Its so squishy and soft, knitted with a 50g ball of Rowan Brushed Fleece bulky yarn (65% merino, 30% alpaca and 5% nylon).

I made a mistake about half way down and this created a kink, but that has made it fold over very neatly to be double thickness. I wasn’t exactly sure how much yarn I had left and so the last few rows were just normal rib, but as I’d already decided it was going to be folded over I figured the normal rib would be hidden on the inside.

(Fisherman’s rib is where you knit 1 and then purl the stitch below the next, on the next round you knit the stitch below the next and then purl 1. It creates a very squishy fabric with a slight brioche look.)

The pattern is free and pretty flexible on how many stitches you cast on and how long you make it, so very easy.

I got as far as putting my new mitten colourwork kit into a project bag, but haven’t cast them on yet.

Jumpers/cardigans

It wasn’t until Wednesday evening that I found some time to continue knitting my Fern and Feather jumper also by Jennifer Steingass. I have finished the colourwork section and I am a little concerned that it’s on the big side, but I’m going with it. I am going down a needle size (from 4mm to 3.75mm) for the body, but I have put a safety line in just in case I need to go back up a needle size.

Spinning

We had a nightmare at the monthly Guild meeting having to swap venues and I had to leave early so I didnt manage to get any spinning done. But I did write up for the Guild’s annual magazine about the breeds I’ve spun so far and took a group shot so thought I’d share that here.

Other News

I binge watched the last season of Ghosts. It’s been my favourite TV show for the last few years and I have all the episodes saved and have watched them countless times. We also finally finished Servant on AppleTV. They really dragged that out one season too many and it just became a chore waiting for the end to finally find out what the heck the 4 seasons had been about.

Apart from that it’s been working and after work processing all the renewals for the Guild. I am looking forward to when I am no longer on the committee, 4 years is definitely enough and I’m ready to get my crafting time back.

This is a Year of Projects post. Officially the Group is in its 13th year, but this is my 6th year participating. If you would like to find more about the Year of Projects Group on Ravelry, as you’d be very welcome to join us. (There are 53 Sundays this YOP year, it happens sometimes!).

Year 13 list.

  1. The Fern and Feather jumper is really pretty. What other color will you be using with that scrumptious red? Your cowl looks extremely squishy and warm. The fisherman’s rib sounds a very interesting. Your jumper on the needles is pretty. I like the colors of it. Four years! Dang, that is a long time to be on the committee. Yes, it is time for a change there.

    • I have quite a few colours so I’m going to enjoy sampling them. I have the Granny Smith green which goes very well and some other greens, creams, a very pale yellow, pale and mid pink, petrol blue so I’ll have a play and hopefully come up with a combo that will look good.

  2. I hope the fern and feather fits. It’s soo pretty. Good idea to go ahead and get the Jamieson’s color you want. I’ve heard of Fisherman’s Rib but haven’t knit it yet. What a fun project to spin different breeds of wool. I love Ghosts too.

  3. The yarn color is stunning. Good call on buying it now before they are all sold out. The jumper looks amazing. Volunteering in organizations is important but too often it seems like the same people are always helping. There arrives a time when you are just done with the extra duties and just want to enjoy a meeting or gathering of a group without all the other business. Speaking from personal expericience.

  4. That jumper looks beautiful. I’ve never tried Fisherman’s Rib, it sounds perfect for a cowl. I love Ghosts, it’s one of those gentle, sweet, eccentric, and very funny shows I think we excel at.

  5. Oh wow you’ve done a fair bit of spinning!! I have a couple of knitting projects I need to finish so I can get back to my spinning. That maroon is so pretty, it’s one of my favorite colors. I have several sweaters (bought not hand knit :P) that are in that color and that sweater is going to look stunning with the gold design on the bottom!!!

  6. WOW! I am not normally a red fan but that maroon is a stunner. It’ll be perfectly warm and snuggly to. I love seeing breed studies by handspinners. I feel like they are such a great knowledge/skill builder.

  7. The shot of the hand spun is fabulous! I love the maroon – I too would have snapped up what I needed, and I love the cowl. The jumper looks amazing, I have my fingers crossed for a good fit.
