YOP13 Week 37/53 – All Work, Gnome Play FO

Acquisitions/Collection Curation

I have bought a 2nd 10dpi rigid heddle reed for my 32” loom. This will enable me to do some twill patterns with 4 ply yarn. I bought it 2nd hand from a lady on Ravelry and when it arrived it was unused and still sealed in its original wrapping, so I got a brand new reed for a bargain price.

Felting

On Monday I finished the other 4 lampshades and published a post with photos and details of the six finished lampshades that were delivered to the gallery, along with two baubles.

Knitting

Accessories

I have finished the first of the Pinwheel fingerless mittens. It will look better once it’s blocked. I have a slight concern about making its buddy for my left hand, as with all the carried yarns at the back it may catch on my rings and watch. This hasn’t been an issue with my DK colourwork mittens but with these using lace yarn it will be easier to snag and tear a thread. Does anyone have any advice?

Other/household

My female gnome, Gnorwen, is finished. The pattern is All Work, Gnome Play by Sarah Schira. The yarn is from Lamington Lass in the colours Beware the Jade Dragon, Pewter and Snowflake.

Isn’t she cute!

Spinning

After last week’s spinning injury from the merino, silk and flax fibre I have abandoned spinning it. I will felt the rest instead.

Instead I went back to spinning my favourite fibre blend, baby camel and silk. I have all these yucky yellows left from the advent so decided to try one of the acid yellows with some of a blue one…to make the yellow less obnoxious. (Sorry to any yellow lovers out there.) I’m going to chain ply it so we shall see how it comes out.

I finally plied the Icelandic singles I’d spun a few weeks ago, it had lost some of its energy and is pretty hair and rough. Not an appealing breed but I’m assured by a friend who has her own Icelandic sheep that they can be lovely to spin. This fibre was from World of Wool, not from fleece. I donated the rest of what I had to the Guild for others to try.

I did a 2nd instalment of my breed study post on Friday. This is probably mostly of interest to those of you who spin.

Other News

Well I’m wondering where the rest of my week went! Truth be told I know.

Last weekend I had my annual catchup (on Messenger) with a guy who used to work for me. He is also into watching films and the Oscars.

We catch up just before the Oscars to say our favourite films of the year and the worst. He mentioned he had just watched his 6,000th movie. I asked how he was tracking them and he said via an app called Letterboxd.

Well folks you can see where my week has mostly gone…creating my own account and logging the movies I’ve seen! As I draft this I’ve logged 2,266 films!! These are ones that came to mind, I haven’t even started looking by year or decade yet….and this doesn’t include any of the hundreds of Hallmark style Christmas movies I’ve watched 😂 He has given a score to all the movies, I’m happy just to record them. I won’t hit 6,000 for sure. But I think I’ll easily get past 3,000.

I use JustWatch app for recording what TV shows we are watching. It’s pretty good because you can plug in what region and streaming services you are in and it tells you where films and TV shows are available. You can also track what episodes you’ve watched, which comes in handy if like us you start a dozen different series on different services and can forget what you started.

Do you record what you watch?

This is a Year of Projects post. Officially the Group is in its 13th year, but this is my 6th year participating. If you would like to find more about the Year of Projects Group on Ravelry, as you’d be very welcome to join us. (There are 53 Sundays this YOP year, it happens sometimes!).

Year 13 list.

  1. Your gnome is so cute! Maybe you could line the mitts? Hand sew in some silk fabric? Not ideal, but a thought. You could also knit in a lining, but that may make them bulky. Or felt the inside in some way?

  2. I think I love your lampshades so much because I find them calming. I sure would love them here in this condo as the lamps are very 1950s!!! Will see what the condo complex garage sale next week as to offer. Your gnome is soo adorable. I really want to make my gnome kit up but sooo much knitting I want to get done now that a baby is on the way!!

  3. Your Gnome is absolutely fantastic! You know I love gnomes. Those little mittens on the gnome are precious. They really make her stand out. Your yellow/blue blend of spinning looks good. I think that was a good idea to blend the two together.

6,000 movies is insane! Even almost 3,000 movies is a lot. I know we watch a lot of movies but I doubt we are anywhere near those counts.

    • I used to go to the cinema pretty much once a week during my 20s and earlier than that was a big renter of VHS tapes and owned a lot and swapped. Now we have Sky, Amazon, Netflix, Disney…I easily watch a movie every other day

  4. Your gnome is so cute!

Maybe adding a lining to the inside of the cuff area for your watch, but the only thing I can think of that is not permanent for your ring is to get a piece of cloth that you could slide under the the top part of the ring and over a couple of times and then take off, or will your ring not take of easily (I have a couple like that)? or you could treat yourself to a watch that is a necklace :P. You’ll only be wearing those in the winter.

  5. Gnorwen is so cute! And your yarn is lovely as always 🙂 I don’t record what I watch, though occasionally I think about it. It would come in handy for those conversations we are increasingly having now that we’re older where we try to remember if we watched something 🙂

  6. Gnorwen is adorable! That’s one I’ve knit, too. You’ve been VERY busy indeed. Congrats on the bargain reed – that’s quite a nice deal. As for the second mitt, the only thing that comes to mind is double knitting which would mean no floats. But it would use more yarn…

I’m a big movie lover…might have to start a Letterboxd account! I also watch a number of TV shows. Right now I’m rewatching The Tudors.

    Thanks for sharing!
