YOP14 Weeks 10-11/52 – a touch of crafting but mostly a personal update

Knitting

Accessories

I’ve made a bit of progress on my 2nd The Shift cowl.  I am using all handspun:

  • Falkland merino (teal)
  • Blue Faced Leicester with Seacell (grey)
  • Baby Camel and Tussah Silk (peach)

Spinning

I did a little more spinning of the alpaca silk blend, this is a never ending 63g of fibre!  Not really, I’m only spinning 1 hour a week which is why it’s going slow.

Other News

I skipped last week’s post as there was so little to show.

I had a steroid injection in my frozen shoulder on Wednesday and had thought this was going to improve things dramatically but the difference so far is negligible.

I’ve been making a lot of soup though! I have a recipe book called Seasonal Soups and made a lovely soup with homegrown veggies including kale (and threw some lentils in too).  Then I made a delicious courgette and cashew nut soup (and threw some lentils in too).  Then ignoring the book I made a carrot and lentil soup with smoked paprika…delicious.  We prefer thicker soups and lentils/orange split peas are perfect for the job and taste so good.

Having ignored the trend of making sour dough during lockdown, I plan on giving it a go at some point.

My car passed its MOT (annual inspection) so I’ll be taking it on its final roadtrip soon before it gets traded in.  I only drove it about 1.7k miles in the last year so it’s just not worth keeping it…and some of those I should have walked.  The bus route now goes past our house and we will swap my husband’s car to one I’ll enjoy driving too and become a one car family.

I’ll be skipping next week too, so will be back in a fortnight hopefully with a bit more crafting to show and details of my car’s last hurrah.

This is a Year of Projects post. Officially the Group is in its 14th year, but this is my 7th year participating. If you would like to find more about the Year of Projects Group on Ravelry, as you’d be very welcome to join us.

Year 14 list.

  1. Your cowl is so pretty. Those colors work quite well together. It is going to be a very warm and cozy cowl for your cold temps. Been a one car family for almost a month now and it has been ok. We do have a light rail system that gets us into the ‘big’ city and several places in between. We also have buses but I have never taken one of them. As we progress in our age, I am sure, using our public transports will be used mored. We do use the light rail now when we go to ball games in the ‘big city’. No traffic hassles! Your soups sound yummy. We are just getting into soup and stew season. I have a couple of them on the menu for this coming week. Do you use a slow cooker for your soups? Or just stove top?

  2. The shift cowl is beautiful and at least is soothing while you deal with the shoulder. I’m sorry the injection did not work as well as you hoped – is it something that you will have multiple of? The soups sound lovely and well done that car on passing so it can go onto someone else!

  3. Third time’s a charm?? I’ve tried twice before. Now I’m trying through WordPress and not through the link in Ravelry. Fingers crossed.

Your cowl looks great. I love the teal and peach colors. I’m sorry the shot didn’t work. It didn’t work for my hubby either.

I love soups. I have tomato dill, pea with ham, red lentil with coconut milk, and yellow lentil soups in the frig and freezer. Soup with salad was a big part of my losing weight 3 years ago. Sadly I’ve put quite a few back on from eating bread almost daily. Bread has to be a treat for me, not a daily staple if I’m going to get my weight back down.

We have been a one car family for 2 years. It works well for us as my husband’s activities (cooking and house maintenance) don’t require a car very often. Still I tease I’m buying a sports car for my 70th birthday.

  4. I’ll be interested in what you choose for a car, as I’m also car shopping. Going from two vehicles to none (or at least, none technically legal after the end of the month!) was rather a shock. And your last trip? I look forward to that post, too!

  5. Your shift cowl is coming along nicely! At least you will save insurance money on not having an extra car? My car insurance rates have gone up a lot, I have an older car and no accidents in over 30 years (and it wasn’t my fault, someone who was drinking and driving ran a red light and slammed into someone and they slammed into me. Ugh, eve after 30 years I still look extra carefully at red lights.) Hope you get a car you love :). I have a bus stop a few blocks from where I live but it would make me have to make a several trips to the grocery store to get groceries home. I could have it delivered but that is an extra cost. I did that when I broke my hand a few years ago, but we didn’t have this inflation going on then. sigh.

Hope your shoulder will heal quickly!

  6. Carrot, Lentil and Paprika soup sounds delicious, Liz. Looking forward to cooler days. That’s when I get in the mood to make soup. I don’t know why that is because soup is good all the time.

  7. Sorry to hear the injection didn’t do much for you shoulder. The Shift cowl looks great! I enjoy soup all year long, but its better to make and eat once the weather is cooler.

  8. Ooh every soup sounds delicious. I’ve never had cashew in soup but now I want to try!

sorry that the jag didn’t help much, maybe it’s a cumulative thing and another one would have more effect? No idea how it all works but I hope it starts sorting itself out soon.
