YOP14 Week 6/52 – Avoiding Second Mitten Syndrome

Knitting

Accessories

I was determined to avoid second sock mitten syndrome (which my  pinwheel mittens are suffering from) by casting on the second Singing Stones mitt once the first one was ready to start the thumb gusset.  They are now at the same point and moved from DPNs to a circular needle.  The pattern is mosaic knitting so they feel pretty quick and easy to knit.

Spinning

I’m on the 2nd bobbin of the alpaca and silk blend from Coastal Colours.  Once its plied I’ll show a photo.

I had a reader ask for a photo of my handspun drawer, turns out there’s two drawers of handspun.  I’ll try to lay them out for a group shot this week and do a separate post.

Weaving

Frame loom

I made a start on doing a tapestry/wall hanging. However, I have realised a couple of things that means I’m going to unpick what I’ve done!

Firstly I’ve got an odd number of warp strings which means my fringe is uneven in one spot.

Secondly, because I was using left over bits of warp string and tying them together I’ve got lots of ugly knots at the top of the project which is no good if I’m going to hang this from the top loops of the warp string. (This may make no sense if you’ve not done or seen this type of project before.). Anyway, I need to switch it round so all the knots in the warp are on the bottom of the work as I’ll be trimming those and they’ll be hidden.

Other News

There’s been less crafting this week because I’ve been trying to do some house cleaning, sorting, packing away Belladrum clothes and camping stuff, laundry, DIY and gardening.

I prioritised house stuff over felting this week so you’ve not missed a “new stock’ post. Those fairies are still not finished! I’ve also sold all the lampshades that are seascapes with a beach, so I need to crack on with making some more of those for the gallery. I also sold 6 baubles in July so need to make some more of those, plus I have some friends who’d like one.

Also there’s been Olympics watching and some of that needs my full attention. Did you see there was break dancing in this year’s Olympics?! It was called “Breaking”, it’s the first and possibly last time, as it’s not going to be at the LA one in 2028.

My favourite event is the rhythmic gymnastics, makes me want to glue some ribbon on a stick and run about twirling it. We have Discovery+ free through Sky TV so I got to watch that.

We watched the three types of climbing and that definitely doesn’t make me want to grab some chalk dust and scale an overhanging wall nope nope nope.  The speed climbing takes less than 5 seconds to finish,  can you imagine training 4 years for a race that takes less than 5 seconds?!

I’m impressed at all who take part in the events but I’m not at all sporty. Have you been watching any? Any highlights that you’ve enjoyed?

This is a Year of Projects post. Officially the Group is in its 14th year, but this is my 7th year participating. If you would like to find more about the Year of Projects Group on Ravelry, as you’d be very welcome to join us.

Year 14 list.

  1. Love your mittens and the texture that mosaic colorworks makes. That sounds like a lot of work to redo your weaving piece. I’m just not an individual sport person so I haven’t watched the Olympics since the soccer matches were only available on a paid streaming channel.

  2. The mittens are very pretty. The colors work great together. I’ve only been watching short videos of the Olympics, whatever comes up in my Facebook feed. I’m not remotely sporty so the little highlights of events are perfect for me.

  3. Wow those mittens are stunning! Sometimes you do have to put your house in order even when it does interfere with the crafting.

  4. Your new mittens are beautiful! You are getting so much done – can’t wait to see all the finished projects 🙂 I haven’t been really watching the Olympics. I’m not sporty, though I do watch highlights when they pop up in my feeds.

  5. Congrats on selling your lampshades. You do know those fairies are going to sell out super fast too. Baubles are always fun to have around too. We have watched some of the olympics too. The rock walls amazed me how fast they went. Gymnastics are always my favorite to watch and they did not disappoint this year. I do prefer the winter olympics though.

    • Yes we enjoy the winter Olympics too but have found as our winter commentators also do the commentating of BMX, skateboarding and similar then it has that almost winter Olympics vibe and the peril seems there too.

  6. The mitts will be very pretty, looking forward to seeing them done.

I love all the floor gymnastic floor exercises and the uneven bars and, I think it’s called something horse where the girls do gymnastic on a bar and I’m sure they are going to fall off as they do flips and jumps lol. I’m not into doing the sports myself, but I love watching tho that can. I love watching all kinds of sports, my favorite is American football, I have to remember to put American in front of it because Europe calls soccer football :).

I haven’t done much knitting or spinning the last two weeks either doing some deep cleaning and sorting, etc. Almost done!!

    • It always puzzles me why it’s called American “football”…since they don’t use their feet much! Well I guess they run on their feet but it’s really cuddleball or holdball lol

  7. I love the colors in your mittens, Liz.I know I would have to do something to keep from suffering from second sock and mitten if I ever knitted any.

Normally, I enjoy watching some of the Olympics, but practically everything that crossed my path that was Olympics related was negative. It really doused my interest this year. It was only after they were over did I wonder if my seeing so many negative stories was simply because the algorithms fed them to me. Made me sad to think that was likely the case. Normally, I catch onto that more quickly.

    • Oh that’s such a shame as so many positive stories in these games. Genuine happiness for fellow competitors, North and South Korea taking selfies together, competitors helping others across the line, I found this one the most joyful of the games…I must have had the opposite algorithm to you. It was heart warming at so many of the events we saw. I remember games of old where the silver medalists could barely raise a smile. There was a turkish shooter that was a cool dude who got a bronze medal and other people who got medals were copying his casual hand in pocket stance. Tom Daily knitting a jumper poolside. That’s a real shame. Hope the algorithms are kinder when it’s in LA.

  8. Your mittens are looking really lovely.

It always seemed to be the swimming whenever we turned on the Olympics, which was exciting but not my favourite to watch. I was really looking forward to the weight lifting but missed it, I’ll have to try youtube.
