YOP14 Week 16/52 – starting to tablet/card weave

Knitting

Jumpers/cardigans

I’m making progress on my Avena jumper. The top section still isn’t laying right but some of the ladies at spin group think it will be fine once its blocked.ย  Given that there is no way I’d repeat knitting all that colourwork I’m hoping they are right…if they are wrong I’ll still wear it anyway.  I have about an inch and a half left of stocking stitch and then rib…followed by sleeve island.

Spinning

I have very nearly finished spinning the alpaca and silk blend from Coastal Colours.  There’s just a tiny amount left on one bobbin I need to Andean ply.  I’ll show the photo now though of the rest.

Weaving

Inkle loom

In April 2022 I got a set of tablet weaving cards and hadn’t got around to doing anything with them.  (I believe in the US it is more commonly known as card weaving, rather than tablet weaving).

On Tuesday I spent a lot of time finally warping my inkle loom and using the tablets.ย  Each tablet has 4 holes in and you thread one yarn through each hole.ย  Which colour you put in each hole and whether you thread it from back to front or front to back is dependent on your pattern.ย

Once all the threads are through all the holes in each of the tablets you tie the ends together and can start to weave.  You rotate the cards either towards you or away from you and that gives you the pattern.  After each turn you feed a weft thread through the gap (shed).

I could have done with choosing colours with better contrast as the blue and grey are too similar.ย  I’m not re-threading it as this is a practice piece and the lack of contrast will help hide mistakes ๐Ÿ˜‚

Other News

I re-started my sourdough starter.ย  I’d been following a recipe that used rye flour but I was using white flour and the consistency was wrong.ย  My new starter “Bubbles II” is 6 days old now…he’s showing signs of life and seems to be benefitting from the felted cosy round the glass jar.ย  Our house is kept at or below 18โฐC usually so that’s a bit cool for sourdough.

My boss was back to work this week having finished her radiation therapy and has been given the all clear which is great.ย

Other than some garden tidying and pruning I think that’s all for this week.

This is a Year of Projects post. Officially the Group is in its 14th year, but this is my 7th year participating. If you would like to find more about the Year of Projects Group on Ravelry, as youโ€™d be very welcome to join us.

  1. Thanks for the pictures and explanation of the card weaving. I like how it looks. Good luck with your sourdough. Homemade bread is so delicious. It’s amazing what blocking can do. I think your jumper will be fine. It’s sooo pretty.

  2. I do hope your Avena jumper blocks perfectly, Liz. In the picture, I can’t see what isn’t perfect, but I understand I just can’t see it. That yoke is a thing of beauty. Glad to hear your boss is finished with radiation. Finishing cancer treatment is a reason to celebrate, but sometimes there are still weeks of recovery to get through. I didn’t have to do radiation, so I don’t know, personally, what that is like, but it is not without damage to recover from. I hope she’s feeling good.

  4. Your sweater is pretty. Hopefully blocking will fix whatever is wrong with it. Although it looks just fine to me. Never had heard of table or card weaving. Sounds like it could be fun. Yours looks good. I think Bubbles II will be fine. Your house isn’t that cold. Mine stays at 20C during the winter and mine still flourishes. Just a bit slower than in the summer. Congrats to you boss. Chemo is a long and road.

  5. Avena is looking good. Blocking is magic and fixed (almost) everything. Thanks for the explanation on tablet weaving. I’ve been intrigued by it for some time now.
