The yarn cost £22.25 for 9 x 50g skeins (same price in 2019 and 2023 which was good).

Pattern

As I wrote about my first version, my second version (in wool/silk) and also wrote about the Fine Sand cardigan (which is basically the same but in DK), I won’t go on too much about it. But you should have guessed I like it.

There are some modifications I’ve made though, and annoyingly I had meant to add a built in icord at the beginning and end of each row and forgot. I made the M2 size.
Modifications
  • After the set up row I added 6 rows of German short rows. My Ravelry project page has more details. I am much happier with the back now.
  • My first one in this yarn was a bit snug on the arms. This time, at the end of the yoke, I added 2 rows, then did 4 more rows with the first of those being another increase row but I only put the increases where the sleeve stitches were. This gave me 4 extra stitches per sleeve and is preferable than cramming in more picked up stitches under the arm.
  • The sleeves I lengthened to wrist length so used over 1 x 50g ball per sleeve.
  • I had to do additional sleeve decreases, as I obviously had more stitches. I did not keep a good record of the decreases but I was doing the sleeve two-at-a-time so it didn’t matter.
  • I tried doing an applied icord along the front trim, but it looked messy. I also tried just crocheting different stitches but that also didn’t look right, so stuck to the pattern. I do think a built in icord would look good next time!
  • I added length to the body too.

Yarn summary

Last time I struggled with this yarn and it was hurting my fingers. I was a fairly new knitter back then so I think my fingers have toughened up as I had no issues this time. It’s very splitty and so you do need to look whilst knitting it or you’ll VERY easily only pick up a few of the threads instead of the full yarn.
I know that with lots of wear this yarn softens beautifully and starts to develop a sheen. I’ve worn my grey one many times. I am sure I’ll be wearing this one a lot too.

  1. That’s really helpful, thank you. I’ve just started knitting, and love a huger backed neck and a scoopier front to my jumpers, and my first jumper had German short rows, this is going to be a really useful resource to help me tweak other patterns to give me that height at the back. Thanks for sharing.

  2. What a beautiful sweater! And you knit it up so quickly! I appreciate your notes about your modification, particularly in light of your previous experience with the pattern. Congratulations. 😊
