YOP14 Week 51/52 – Two finished projects (advent and little gemstones)

As much as I was tempted to warp my new loom I realised this is the penultimate week of this year’s YOP year!  So, I wanted to get some things finished so they don’t need carrying forward.

Knitting

Shawls

On Thursday I managed to finish all the gemstones on my Little Gemstones shawl by Claire Slade and do a couple of rows of garter stitch.  On Saturday I was then able to do the bind off.

It is currently laid out damp, but here’s a look before blocking. When it is dry I will do an FO post for it.

Spinning

The Taurus blend from World of Wool 70% merino/30% tussah silk I spun last week has been plied.  Its lovely and soft.  The finished yarn is 142m of DK so hopefully I can find a pattern to use it on that  will go round my neck.

As you can see, I also finished spinning my final advent, Day 24…this blend is even softer! Once it was finished I wrote a separate blog post about the World of Wool 2024 Fibre Advent

I’ve also finished two bobbins of singles of another blend from my stash; that will be plied later today and shown next week.

Other News

Unfortunately the people I hoped would take the parrot aren’t able to. The parrot sanctuary in Scotland aren’t accepting any more birds and not even adding any more birds to their waiting lists. I was thinking of doing a poster to put up in the local vets, see if that gets any response. I’m trying to stay optimistic but it’s challenging.

My garden veggies are coming along and I did a snapshot blog post for my gardening blog. (Almost no words, just images that become a handy record and reminder for future years.)

This coming week is the final week of this YOP year. With me hiding from the parrot, in my craft-room, so much, hopefully I will tick off another list item!

This is a Year of Projects post. Officially the Group is in its 14th year, but this is my 7th year participating. If you would like to find more about the Year of Projects Group on Ravelry, as you’d be very welcome to join us.

Year 14 list.

  1. The gen stone is really pretty. I am also stunned at the beauty of your hair. People here are paying huge amounts of money to achieve that color! Good luck on rehoming the parrot.

    • Thank you Marsha that’s made my morning. My hair is 100% my natural colour, even the pure white streaks. My hairdresser is always saying people pay her to put highlights and front streaks (they have a real name when she says it). I like it, and certainly love not having root regrowth.

  2. Your gemstone shawl is beautiful. Perfect colors on you, Liz! I do hope you find a new home soon for your parrot. I’m so sorry your hopeful new home for her didn’t work out.

  3. Your gemstones shawl turn out so lovely! I like the colors you choose and how well they go together.

Sorry the parrot rescue can’t take your parrot :(. What kind of parrot is it? The vet might be a good place to look, he or she, might even know someone who has parrots that would take him.

    • She is an orange winged Amazon. I assume their loud volume comes from having to shout through the trees of the jungle. I know its just her nature, it just physically and mentally affects me. I am going to try the vets for sure. Its just so unlikely someone will have had one before and would like another…because if you have one you basically have it for life they live so long.

      • maybe tho if they have one, a 2nd one would be company from their present one and a little less noise as they have a friend and not trying to get your attention all the time :).

    • Thank you, it’s fun to knit. I used German short rows instead. She has a cowl pattern to which I’m going to give a go…I haven’t looked yet to see how different it will be in the round…hopefully no purl stitches 😂

  4. Your shawl looks really lovely, and I adore the colors on it–so beautiful! I’ll bet it looks fabulous now after blocking. Hope the poster helps with a new home for the parrot.

    • Thank you. There’s a cowl as well. I will be publishing an FO post later today about the shawl with my thoughts on the yarn and pattern. It would be ideal for small bits of handspun too.
