Year of Projects – July 2022 – June 2023 Final Review (Week 52/52)

Here we are at the end of the latest Year of Projects year. This was the Groupโ€™s 12th Year (YOP12), but my 5th Year. You’ll notice a lot of โ†ช๏ธ symbols…these were items I’d carried forward from an earlier YOP year. One of my main aims for this year was to complete/achieve all those carried forward items! Well I won’t give any spoilers on how I did.

This is a loooong post, as I like to refer back to my links and thoughts on things, so feel free to scan read or skip sections that hold no interest.

Key:
โ†ช๏ธ carried over from a previous YOP year
โœณ๏ธ started
โœ… finished โŽ technically a fail of original target
๐Ÿ†• added to list after week 1
โ‰๏ธ fell at a hurdle but back on track
โ€ผ๏ธ abandoned
๐Ÿธ frogged

NB. There are links to the Ravelry pattern, yarn or project page. My comments about the items on my list are in bold italics. I update these throughout the year.

Acquisitions/Stash Management

  • โ†ช๏ธ โŽ No new superwash knitting yarns (My stash has enough to make socks for many years.)
    • Q1 – I bought 2 skeins of sw DK BFL/Silk at Highland Meet the Makers and 1 skein of sw 4ply merino/silk to have a project to knit on in Wisconsin.
    • Q2 – I bought a Zauberball in Copenhagen, but it was for the Alaska hat but now I realise itโ€™s not right yarn for that. I also bought some sock yarn to knit a pair of socks for my husband for Christmas.
    • Q3 – no superwash yarn bought! ๐Ÿ˜€
    • Q4 – 2 DK sock skeins and 2 skeins of sw merino/yak/silk bought. Then 5 skeins of Malabrigo Rios!
      • Total = 14 skeins of superwash bought ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ
  • โ†ช๏ธ โŽ Contain my stash! (Limit stash to only what will fit in existing containers (2 x Kallax unit, rainbow drawers and weaving shelves) and have no overflow containers or bags, only exception to be hand processed Shetland X fleece.).
    • By week 18 this was a big fail, I have easily another drawer I could fill with new yarn I bought from New Lanark and in Copenhagen oops!
    • With some juggling, by week 30 all yarns fit (not all fibre though!).
    • By week 46 it was overflowing again because of the fibre a friend gave me.
    • Overflow is gifted fibre and fleeces Iโ€™ve washed so thatโ€™s a small achievement.
  • โ†ช๏ธ โ€ผ๏ธ Buy yarn for a larger Havana only once I have made space for it! This is hopefully going to keep me motivated to use existing stash for everything else. โ€ผ๏ธ
    • This is on hold for the foreseeable futureโ€ฆone day though, maybe YOP20!
  • ๐Ÿ†• โœ… Use loom waste and other random small skeins/leftovers or throw them away/donate.
    • Pom-poms made week 26, crocheted dish scrubbies with loom waste and a mat using random skein during week 26
    • Over the year Iโ€™ve used some as ties for handspun and attaching labels.
  • ๐Ÿ†• โœ… Put all yarns I am not sure I will ever use into one drawer and de-stash at the end of the year if no use or plan is found for them.
    • Drawer filled week 26, some given away to a requester from Ravelry.
    • Week 48 I have given away all acrylic and the lace wool/cotton yarn.
    • The majority has now gone, I’ve kept some mercerised cotton as may use this on my Inkle loom.

Crochet

  • โ€ผ๏ธ Havana blanket (once I have enough room in Kallax to store the yarn!) โ€ผ๏ธ
    • This will be on a future list possibly, but at the moment we have enough blankets.

Dyeing

  • โ†ช๏ธ Dye more locks for fairiesโ€™ hair
  • โœ… Experiment with microwave dyeing.
    • Dyeing fun day with the Guild included microwaving acid dyes and using some fibre reactive and solar reactive dyes. Week 46

Felting

  • โ†ช๏ธ โœณ๏ธ Needle felted Ylva (Started YOP9!)
  • โ†ช๏ธ โœณ๏ธ Needle felted Highland Cow (Started YOP9!)
  • โ†ช๏ธ โœณ๏ธ Make a handbag using the felting ball (Started YOP11 week 24 fibres weighed and test felt)
  • โœ… Pictures and products to sell/gift/keep.
    • Fairies – August x 1 (gift), October x 9, February x 4
    • Lampshades 20cm – November x 7, March x 3
    • Lampshades 25cm – December x 4, June x 2
    • Lampshades 35cm – โ€ผ๏ธ
    • Lampshades 40cm – August x 1
    • Tomte – October x 2, November x 7
    • Baubles – November x 7, December x 1, March x 4 (3 to sell, 1 to keep), June x 2
    • Wreaths – โ€ผ๏ธ
    • Waste paper bin – August x 1
    • Sewing bin – March x 1
  • โ†ช๏ธ Make plant pot covers

My felting mojo has been significantly lower this YOP year, only 56 items made, last YOP year I made 78.

Fibre Prep

  • โ†ช๏ธ โœณ๏ธ Finish washing BFL/Shetland X (from Katharine) started washing and using it YOP 9.
  • โ†ช๏ธ โœณ๏ธ Finish washing Shetland X (from Serena) started washing YOP11 week 1
  • โœ… Practice combing wool fibre I did do some combing week 42.

I failed miserably on these targets, processing raw fleece to combed or carded fibre isn’t something I enjoy. I did however make some carded batts and rolags and used some fibre scraps in some baubles as Christmas decorations.

Knitting

Accessories

  • โŽ Knit using existing stashed yarn or handspun only โ—๏ธ*oops I bought some new yarns:

    • ๐Ÿ†• โœ… The Shift by Andrea Mowry using handspun, Border Leicester and Cochrane leftovers started week 7, finished week 20.
      • I wear this a lot and think Iโ€™ll make another at some point that is slightly thicker.

      • *I used Isager Yarn Jensen which I bought in Copenhagen. Iโ€™m not sure the adaptation to the design worked as well as hoped.
    • โ€ผ๏ธ๐ŸธAlaska hat (if I find a non-superwash kit I like at Wisconsin Wool Festival). Update: I couldnโ€™t find non-superwash so I am going to use a zauberball* and existing stash. started week 21 frogged week 28.

      • โœ…4๏ธโƒฃ using sock blank started week 38, finished week 40.
        • If I didnโ€™t already have a mountain of sock yarn, I would buy more sock blanks to knit from.

    • I have plenty of project bags already, I donated the jeans or recycled them.
  • โ€ผ๏ธ Make actual top with handwoven cotton fabric I make โ€ผ๏ธ

  • โœณ๏ธ Spin 2021 baby camel and silk advent fibres started week 28.
    • I have only spun a couple of the days during this YOP year, if I identify a pattern to make first, that may help me progress.

Weaving

Dorset buttons

Wood

Have a 3rd lesson in wood turning.

Iโ€™ll carry this forward as I would like another go, but just didnโ€™t get round to it this YOP year.

Congratulations if you’ve made it this far! (It’s fine if you skipped through.) Overall I’m pleased with what I’ve achieved over the last 12 months.

  • Crochet : 2 scrubbies and a mat
  • Knitting : 3 jumpers, 2 hats, 1 pair of mittens, 1 cowl, 1 shawl, 1 sheep & outfit and 9 pairs of socks
  • Felting : 56 items
  • Sewing : 1 project bag and 1 top
  • Spinning : 1.63 miles including 14 breeds for breed study
  • Weaving : a few Dorset Buttons, 2 towels, 1 scarf and 1 tapestry

I’m a little disappointed in how many things I’d carried over from year 11 that I will be carrying forward to year 13. I’ve already drafted next YOP year’s list that I will publish next Sunday. I suspect I am being over ambitious again, but I always work better with more “to do” than less.

If you are interested in joining our group then please do take a look at the details on Ravelry. This is a good time to join as many of us use the July to June ‘year’.

Other News

I went to visit my friend Norah on the Isle of Skye on Friday, just for the day. We went to Dunvegan Castle and gardens and had a lovely day. It only takes 2 hours, from where I live (on the east coast), to get to Skye (off the west coast), but takes another hour to drive across the island to her.

I am going to be starting a part time job mid-July which will mean I wonโ€™t have as much for crafting. Itโ€™s just 15 hours a week and close enough to walk to when itโ€™s nice weather. I shall still be making lampshades, baubles and fairies in my spare time to sell in the gallery though.

Wish me luck! Itโ€™s 6 years since I went on sabbatical and then resigned.

  1. Such progress! While I don’t plan my crafting this way, I admire it in others and like seeing what you got done, what you learned and where you went off piste!

  2. You have accomplished so much in your YOP! I found it very interesting to see where you changed craft to tackle a project, and I’ve learned a lot from your lists — I am nowhere near as versatile a crafter as you clearly are.

Good luck with the job. It will undoubtedly be a culture shock, but one I hope you will weather and come to enjoy.

  3. I LOVE your symbols for coding your progress. What a year!! Always love your felting and I forgot how much I love the bin you felted. Dolores is soooo cute. Those glasses are perfect! She would put a smile on my face too. Here’s hoping you enjoy your parttime job. Haha – maybe you will become a “knitting while walking” knitter too. I suggest DK or worsted weight yarns and small circular projects like socks or hats. I know the perfect cross body nylon bag to use – I’ll mail you one of mine.

  4. Ah, so many lovely things to look at. Dolores is probably my favorite just because I am a kid at heart. The Juniper bag is also a favorite of mine. You did so well this past year. I am very impressed. Now you will be going back to work! What will you be doing? I hope you will enjoy it. Looking forward to seeing next years plans. Especially for all the yarn you just ordered LOL.

    • Thanks Marsha, yes I think Dolores is my favourite too. Sheโ€™s having a holiday in our spare room whilst we have the parrot at oursโ€ฆI donโ€™t want her getting bird dust dusty. Itโ€™s doing accounts at a tractor firm.

  5. I need to take notes as by the time I get down here to comment I’ve forgotten it all! LOL! You are amazing with all you get done in 1 year…the sheep is so darn cute and her little outfits. I love the cowl and so much more I can’t recall the names.
Thank you again for finding my YOP list from last year!
I’m like you, I would rather plan for more even if I don’t make it which I never do! BTW, there is a couple who have a podcast “living the Skye Life” on You Tube and I watch them every week since they started podcasting. He’s a musician and she’s an artist. I want to buy some of her artwork….she’s really good and sells note cards of animals on Skye.
Anyway, what was your sabbatical and what did you retire from? I must have missed that part. Here’s to another year of creating and having good friends here!
I would like to get emails of people although I guess they’re all on Ravelry. Also, how do you get those “keys” with the different meanings? Like your check mark for finished and your circular arrow for forwarded? I notice you have a .com as opposed to blogger so that is probably why.
Have a good week and I can’t wait to see your list for this coming YOP year!

  6. First off, Dunvegan Castle was one of the highlights of our visit a few years back. The gardens are stunning. Good luck with your re-entry into the work force. I’m sure it’ll take a bit of adjustment but hopefully not too much.

I always love to see your yearly summary posts. It’s so much fun to see what you’ve accomplished over that time. Lots of great things!
